Horizon Lines engaged Martin & Ottaway to develop a novel MARPOL compliance improvement program. This program depends on Martin & Ottaway’s deep knowledge and experience with MARPOL concepts and educational methodologies and Horizon Lines’ desire to achieve environmental and sustainability goals that go beyond mere MARPOL compliance.
The program was designated the HORIZONGreen MARPOL Compliance Rapid Improvement Plan (MCRIP) and centers on four conferences that allow for all Horizon Lines senior shipboard personnel to attend at least one of the conferences.
The first conference took place in Clarke, New Jersey on April 5 and 6, 2011 and besides ship’s personnel attendance also counted on senior management personnel, USCG inspector and technical personnel and union representatives attendance.
This first conference was a no holds barred workshop where no stone was left unturned to achieve new levels of excellence in environmental compliance. The results of the conference presentations and discussions were compiled and will be the basis for upgrades of Horizon Lines’ environmental policies and will be used to refine MCRIP conferences 2, 3 and 4 which will take place in May, June and July.
Martin & Ottaway is proud to be part of this effort since it is the first instance of a ship operator truly reaching deep within its own experience base to collect realistic MARPOL operational data and to share it with the USCG and other stakeholders in an effort to serve all ship operators in improving MARPOL compliance.
