It can be an exhausting and often confusing task. Today there are great tools to quickly build a model, but even with the best tools (drones, laser scanning, digital photo analysis, video, AIS, etc) ultimately the main question needs to be answered: What the hell happened?
Remarkably, after all the work has been done, the actual mechanics become rather straightforward and often irrefutable.
