Ship valuation is as old as shipping (I’ll pay you three buckets of clams for that dugout there, not a clam more). Oddly the practice of ship valuations was never very carefully explained.
In this paper, originally prepared as the Association of Average Adjusters Chairman’s address, Harry Ottaway provides the basics of ship valuation. These are the easy bits; once the basics are established, things become more complicated.
The paper became a classic and has been widely quoted and reprinted.
